We've recently switched to InDesign CS2 and have had two of our suppliers come back to us and tell us that they get an error when they try to open up the files we've supplied....any ideas

The message box is as follows:
Cannot open the file "XXXX.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.

Please help if you have experienced this before.

Thanks

It's almost certain that they are using InDesign CS, not CS2.

So, are you actually using any third-party plugin?

If you'd like to zip or stuff one such file, and send it to me, I'll try opening it in CS2 on both Mac and Windows. (Click my name for the address).

I've had this exact same problem with a couple vendors. Both are using CS2. I use CS2 straight out of the box - no pluggins or anything! Very annoying problem.

A simple solution would be wonderful. I don't want to have to make .inx files everytime. No time!!!

Any ideas???

The problem to which John referred had to do with something that happened to the files along the way - either as a result of a file server, or email process - that added 128 bytes to the beginning of the file. When I removed the first 128 bytes in a hex editor, and saved the file, it would open without problem.

If you are able to open the file, but get an alert about the missing plugin, then that is not your problem. If you'd like to send me a sample file, I'd be happy to take a look at it. Click my name for the email address.
